American Mathematician, Michael Thoreau Lacey, was born on September 26, 1959. He is currently a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is the Associate Chair of the Faculty of Mathematics.
Michael graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Science from the University of Texas in the year 1981. He continued to further his studies and in 1987, he attained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign while under Walter Philipp’s supervision. Michael’s main focus is on harmonic analysis, but his work has also touched on ergodic theory and probability.
Michael Lacey did a thesis on probability in Banach spaces and was able to come up with a solution to a problem that is related to the law of logarithm for empirical characteristic functions.
He is one of those people that I would describe as being problem solvers. He is particularly keen on solving iterated logarithm puzzles.
Over the years, Michael has worked in different universities, for example, he was an assistant mathematics professor at the Louisiana State University, Indiana University, University of North Carolina and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Before becoming a full professor in 2001, Michel had fourteen years of experience to his name. While at the Indiana University, Michael became a Postdoctoral Fellow of the National Science Foundation. Lacey has been the recipient of a number of awards and currently has over 100 publications in his name. He has also offered support, with the help of the National Science Foundation, to others in researching for their own publications.
Talk of being an over performer. In 1996, he, together with his partner Christopher Thiele, solved the Alberto Calderon conjecture and, because of this, in 1997, they received the Prix Salem Award. In 2004, he received the Guggenheim Fellow Award and in 2012 he received the Simons Fellow Award.
His most recent award was the American Mathematical Society Fellow Award which he received in 2013.
